The Palisades of the Hudson

Below is a partial listing of park regulations and policies that are of most importance to park visitors in the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey.

ACCIDENTS

Accidents of any kind should be reported to the Park Police at 201-768-6001 or to the nearest Park Commission employee as soon as possible. Due to the configuration of the park and the interference caused by the cliffs, in an emergency, visitors are urged to call the Park Police before calling 911.

ALCOHOL

Alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, whiskey, or other intoxicating beverages may not be dispensed, sold, or possessed with intent to consume except pursuant to a permit issued by the Park Commission, and then only in accordance with conditions and limitations specified in the permit.

BICYCLING

Bicycles may be ridden on Henry Hudson Drive from Edgewater to Alpine, including Alpine Approach Road, but a helmet must be worn at all times, cyclists must keep right, and groups must ride single file.

Bicycles, including mountain bikes, may not be ridden on the pathways at Fort Lee Historic Park and Allison Park, on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, on Dyckman Hill Road, or on any park trails. Henry Hudson Drive and other park roads are closed to bicycles during hazardous conditions.

BOATING

Trailered boats up to 24 feet in length can be launched from Hazard’s Ramp in the Ross Dock Area only. Car-top boats may be launched from Bloomer’s Beach and Alpine Beach. Boaters must comply with all applicable New Jersey State laws and regulations pertaining to boating.

COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY

The selling or offering for sale, hire or lease of any merchandise, service or other thing of value is prohibited on Park Commission property.

DECORATIONS, MARKINGS & SIGNAGE

No decorations, markings, or signage shall be affixed to, drawn on, or hung on any park building, sign, gate, post, road, wall, tree, stone, or other structure, or set up or erected as a free-standing structure, without the approval of the Superintendent. This shall include, but not be limited to, posters, signs, banners, etc. Use of any kind of metal fasteners (staples, screws, etc.) or other devices that puncture or scar park property is strictly prohibited.

Prohibited decorations and markings include but are not limited to paint, balloons, chalk, colored powder, glitter, confetti, etc. See also PROHIBITED ARTICLES, below.

DRONES

Flying of drones or radio-controlled aircraft is not allowed in the park.

FIRES

Fires for cooking are allowed in designated picnic areas only and are prohibited at Allison Park, Fort Lee Historic Park, State Line Lookout, on hiking trails, and in wooded areas. Fires must be contained in a grill, barbecue, or fire ring suitable for that purpose. Ground fires, garbage-can fires, and candles are prohibited. Grills are not allowed on tables, in any structure, or under any building overhang. Coals must be extinguished before being disposed in coal barrels. Visitors are permitted to bring their own grills and fuel.

FISHING

Fishing and crabbing are allowed from the docks and along the seawall. Licenses are not necessary, but activities are subject to the regulations of the NJ-DEP. All State size and possession limits apply. Anyone over the age of 16 fishing must hold a New Jersey Saltwater Registry permit. (The permit is free — click here for more information.)

FLORA & FAUNA

Destruction, damage, or removal of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plant life is prohibited. Hunting is strictly prohibited and animals shall not be introduced to or removed from park property.

GARBAGE & RECYCLING

All garbage must be disposed of in receptacles provided for that purpose. Visitors should separate aluminum, glass, and plastics from trash and place in marked receptacles.

HENRY HUDSON DRIVE

Henry Hudson Drive may be temporarily closed for maintenance work, emergency situations, such as rockslides and tree falls, or when traffic control measures are implemented. At such times, Henry Hudson Drive is closed to ALL vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. When a barrier or sign has been put in place by Park Police or the Park Commisison on any of its roadways, the roadway beyond that barrier is to be considered closed for ALL use.

HOURS

Park areas are open from 6 AM to 9 PM from April through October and 6 AM to 7 PM from November through March.

LITTERING

Littering, polluting, and dumping on Park Commission lands or in Park waters are prohibited. Items become litter when left behind or released accidentally or on purpose by park visitors.

LOST & FOUND

Found articles should be turned over to the Park Police. Lost articles can be retrieved at the Park Police Headquarters at Park Headquarters.

NOISE

Loud and unreasonable noise is prohibited. Music is allowed in the picnic areas at a reasonable volume that does not disturb other park visitors or disrupt park events.

PERMITS

Permits are required for 1) picnics or outings involving 25 or more participants, 2) buses or vehicles seating 15 or more people, 3) photography or filming not intended for personal use, 4) facility rentals, 5) educational research, and 6) camping. Permits must be obtained in advance from Park Headquarters during regular business hours. Contact the administrative office for additional information.

PETS

Pets are prohibited in any picnic area, on the pathways at Fort Lee Historic and Allison Parks, and in any building operated by the Commission. Properly leashed they may be taken on trails. Owners must clean-up after their pets.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES

Swimming, cliff climbing, hunting, trapping, horseback riding, metal detecting, snowmobiling, gambling, advertising, soliciting, vending, and overnight parking are prohibited.

PROHIBITED ARTICLES

Possession or use of drugs, alcohol, fireworks, explosives, firearms, bows and arrows, axes, chain saws, and other weapons or cutting tools are prohibited. For other prohibited articles, see DECORATIONS, MARKINGS & SIGNAGE, above.

PROHIBITED VEHICLES

Commercial vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, motorized bicycles, animal-drawn vehicles, snowmobiles, and any scooter, moped, or other similar motorized vehicle with wheel diameters less than 15 inches are prohibited.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

Defacing, destroying, or otherwise altering Park Commission property is prohibited. No permanent markings may be made on any tree, rock, road, or structure.

REGULATED ACTIVITIES

Camping, group picnics, weddings, wedding ceremonies, wedding pictures, commercial and non-profit photography, walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons, live entertainment, and catering services are regulated activities requiring a permit issued by the Superintendent.

VEHICLES

Vehicles must pay the established fee to enter the park and may only park in designated areas. Parking or stopping along any park road or parking in undesignated areas is prohibited. Vehicles may not obstruct the flow of traffic. Cars without boat trailers may only use Hazard’s Ramp if they have a car-top boat. After-hours and overnight parking are prohibited.

The Palisades Interstate Parkway is limited to passenger cars and motorcycles only. Trucks and cars pulling trailers, R.V.s/motor homes, and cars or pickup trucks with commercial or combination plates or business markings or advertising are prohibited on the Parkway. Buses or vehicles seating 15 or more people must have a permit.
